NCAA to probe risks of multiple helmets

Oregon football players used three helmets last season - green, black and white - that were mixed and matched with myriad uniform combinations.

The Ducks were pioneers in football fashion and other schools have followed, using helmets to make a statement. Now, the NCAA wants to determine whether style is coming at the expense of safety.

The governing body's football oversight committee will meet this week in Indianapolis and is to begin studying whether multiple helmets could lead to more concussions and serious head and neck injuries.

Former Seminole Rolle meets career goal

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Myron Rolle has accomplished many things on and off the field. His biggest ones, though, might still be coming up.

Rolle's dream of becoming a doctor came to fruition on May 20 when he graduated from Florida State's College of Medicine. The former All-American safety and Rhodes Scholar has not had much time to reflect on the accomplishment. He moved to Boston at the beginning of June and will start his residency at the Harvard Medical School's neurosurgery program at Massachusetts General Hospital on July 1.

Ex-Vanderbilt player convicted of rape

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A jury on Friday convicted a former Vanderbilt University football player charged along with three of his teammates in the 2013 gang rape of an unconscious female student.

After about 15 hours of deliberation over two days, the jury found Brandon Banks guilty of one count of aggravated rape and one count of aggravated sexual battery. He was found not guilty on five other counts.

Ex-Spartans player to be tried for rape

MASON, Mich. (AP) Former Michigan State football player Auston Robertson has been ordered to trial on sexual assault charges.

A 20-year-old woman testified Thursday that Robertson raped her at her off-campus apartment in April. The defensive end from Fort Wayne, Indiana, was kicked off the team after he was charged.

Ban won't stop Tide from hosting Fresno

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Fresno State's football game at the University of Alabama this fall is expected to go on as scheduled, despite California's decision to ban travel to Alabama by its state employees.

"We look forward to the game" on Sept. 9 in Tuscaloosa, University of Alabama spokeswoman Kellee Reinhart said Friday.

Former Arizona St. coach Kush dies at 88

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Frank Kush, the fearsome coach who transformed Arizona State from a backwater football program into a powerhouse, died Thursday. He was 88.

"Coach Kush built ASU into a national football power," ASU President Michael M. Crow said in a statement. "He taught us how to make football work, and he put ASU on the map long before it was a full-scale university.

Former Kansas OL Lonekar dead at 46

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Keith Loneker, the former Kansas offensive lineman who spent three years in the NFL before becoming a modestly successful actor, died Thursday. He was 46.

The school announced Loneker's death in a statement. No cause was given, though son and current Kansas linebacker Keith Loneker Jr. said he'd been diagnosed with cancer late last year.
